Walking in the shoes of poor women and girls

May 12, 2010

By Filomena Perri, Year 10 Student at Presentation College

Imagine living in an environment where water is not an instant away. Imagine the access of such a resource depending on one woman and her steps.

On the 20th of March, the Year 10 young women of Presentation College sought to make a difference and fill the footsteps that women are often burdened with daily. Motivated by CARE Australia and their “Walk In Her Shoes” campaign, the Year 10s were inspired to address the daily challenge on behalf of millions of females around the world. By pledging to walk 10,000 steps and finding the support of sponsors to raise money in the name of change, we walked towards improving the future for women.

We walked from our school to Fitzroy Gardens where we had a short break and made the final stages of our journey towards Federation Square. All together we walked 10 kilometers which we all felt was a rather fantastic achievement even though at times our own fitness and endurance were being tested. But at the end of the day we were making a change for the women of our planet. In representing the action that females carry out every day, with every single stride, we were committed to put their needs above our own.

Eventually we finished our journey at the Yarra River where a beautiful barbecue was set up by the lakeside. The Year 10’s achievement was priceless. ‘Walk In Her Shoes’ was a special journey as Presentation College was the first group to participate in walking for women through the new campaign. This made the significance of every step more worthwhile. Looking back on the “Walk In Her Shoes” day, I can honestly say that it was a time where I had the chance to reflect upon what women have to bear and face every day: the burden of walking for survival. This reality needs to change and we as Year 10s played our part in this revolution and call for difference within our world.
